I've been watching through the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, and I just love this cartoon. It's quirky and fun, and has a lot of things in it that I still consider my personal Mario "canon." Oh, sure, it was a little too out-there sometimes, and the animation/voice mistakes from time to time were distracting, but the show had a lot of heart.
Danny Wells and the late Captain Lou Albano provided what I still believe to be the best voices of Mario and Luigi ever (sorry, Charles Martinet). Both captured the characters' personalities so well, too: Mario being the brave, look-before-he-leaps type, Luigi being cautious to a fault. (It's interesting that the Luigi characterization would go on to be the official Nintendo characterization as well! Coincidence? Maybe, but it's a fun coincidence! )
In this picture, I wanted to do a little tribute to the show. While I didn't necessarily try to capture the likenesses of Wells and Albano, I blended the classic cartoon look with the outfits of the live action silly segments. I also did my best to recreate their (actually really cool) basement apartment in Brooklyn. There's a little cameo from a certain recurring character, too!
I hope you enjoy it, and remember: Hangin' with the plumbers, you'll be hooked on the Brothers! (to the brink!)
Who knew that a WWF Wrestler and the bartender from The Jeffersons would have become fixtures to the early gaming masses in that show. Same VA for Toad I swear was for Meowth. And if it is, I just blew my own mind.
Man. ...Wereturtles. With a bit of Thriller playing no less as Koopa Troopas become dire.
...dear god it's been so long since I saw that show. I remember it, of course, from when I was a kid, but still, it's been so long! Do the DVDs have the live action segments still?
Yes, almost all of them! There are apparently some that had some licensing issues (music, mostly, I believe)that prevent them from being on the DVD, so there are some cartoon episodes not framed with the live-action stuff. But a good majority of them are, for better and for worse!
